Hamlet (Collins Classics) is set in the Kingdom of Denmark, where King Hamlet is murdered by his brother Claudius. Though Hamlet, the son of the King, is the heir to the throne, his uncle Claudius declares himself King. When Hamlet comes from Germany to attend his father’s funeral, he learns that his mother, Gertrude, is now married to Claudius. In Hamlet, one night the dead King’s ghost visits his son in the castle, and tells him about his own murder. To test the authenticity of this story, the prince decides to enact a play which recreates the circumstances of King Hamlet’s death. When the show is staged, Claudius jumps up and quickly leaves the theatre. Hamlet is now certain of his uncle’s guilt, and decides to seek revenge. The protagonist ends up killing six people, including Polonius, who was Claudius’s trusted chief counsellor. Laertes, Polonius’ son, is overcome with anger and Claudius takes full advantage of this. He encourages Laertes to take revenge on Hamlet. A sword fight between the men is organized, with poison-tipped blades. Hamlet is wounded. What will happen next?
